About Me

This blog was created mostly as an outlet for me and anyone who cares about what I do in my spare time. I know there are tons of other ways I could have published this information but I am not very "techy"; (I don't own anything that starts with an "i": ipad, iphone or ipod) and I like to stick with what I know, hence the blog format. I realized my life is busy but I needed an outlet, taking time to do something that I enjoy, for my sanity. This blog will document all the random projects, activities, interests that I do in my free time. This will be an evolving blog but who knows maybe you will enjoy the read and even learn something.

Homeade Baby Wipes

Like everyone else I am always trying to be a little more resourceful and save money but also value my time. Cloth diapers were NEVER an option and so I started looking for other places and ways to save money. I found ways to make my own baby wipes. I have been doing these for 6 months plus now and they work great.  Some people think they are not sanitary and that you end up using more of the homeade wipes because they are not a strong..etc. I took all this into consideration but realized the money saving factor out-weighed them all. There are several methods out there some more complicated and expensive than others. This one worked the best for me out of all the "simple" recipies. I had never really thought of this so I pass it on for all those other moms who feel they are always spending lots of money on baby when all it does is end up in the trash. I do keep store bought ones for the diaper bag, just easier.

Materials
Round plastic container, Rubbermaid #6 or #9 works well but hard to find. I use a round juice container from the dollar store. I did have a hard time finding a container.
Thick, strong roll of white paper towels (I have heard it has be Bounty but I have used others Viva,  Walmart brand, Scotts, etc. They all seem to work about the same but do make sure they are heavier duty)
Sharp knife (or electric knife) to cut paper towel roll in half. (Best results with my electric knife. You need to have clean cut or you little paper bits everywhere)
2 cups water that has been boiled and cooled to room temperature
2 Tablespoons baby shampoo or baby wash  (I prefer body wash over the shampoo..less grimey. I hate to throw out name brands but this does seem to have effect. I like Aveno Baby Wash or Johnson & Johnson Baby Wash.)
1 Tablespoon baby oil
 Directions:
1. Cut the roll of paper towels in half with a knife and remove the inner cardboard core.
2. Boil water and let cool then mix ingredients. (I think boiling makes them stay wetter moist longer)
3. Place the paper towels in the container with the cut side facing downward.
4. Secure lid tightly and allow to sit until all liquid is absorbed into the paper towels.
5. Turn the container upside-down and allow to sit for 10 minutes.
6. Open container and 'start' the roll by pulling a towel from the inside of the roll.
7. Wipes are now ready to use.
Additional Tips:
Make sure the container is closed tightly after each use to prevent drying out.  If you don't use them a lot there is a possiblity even with a tight lid of them becoming sort of dry. I use them very fast so rarely do I have that problem.

When your baby is older and his skin is less sensitive, you can add about a teaspoon of rubbing alcohol to the mix. This helps them not dry out so fast.
